Law And Legal English With A Cambridge Advantage

Legal English Intensive is our course for more experienced lawyers who have only one week available to study in Cambridge. It is your opportunity to study the legal English that you see in the office as part of your work and would like to know more about.
This course is based on the questions we have been asked by senior lawyers from law firms and companies around the world, and includes explanations of the vocabulary of contracts drafted in English, as well as a good overview of how the common law of the UK and the USA works in practice.
Legal English Intensive is a practical course that will allow you to return to the office with more knowledge and more confidence.
You can learn a lot in a week with us, and the course also includes access to our online contract drafting course and recorded legal English modules after you return home.
Legal English Intensive focuses on your accuracy when speaking and writing in legal English, as well as the most essential legal concepts, such as warranties, indemnities, forms of security, and contracts with common law jurisdictions in the event of dispute.

A Typical day

Classes start at 9am. Our group size is a maximum of 10, and we make sure that each lawyer in the group has lots of opportunity to ask questions to the class teacher.
The day is divided into four sessions of 90 minutes each. Your teacher will assess you level of legal English upon arrival so that you get the maximum benefit from your time.
A major focus is on the English legal vocabulary and accurate grammar that you need to do your job well. The first session of the day may be about the difference in contract law between the common law countries and your own. We look at what key commercial vocabulary really means in a way that a legal dictionary cannot explain.
Our contract drafting material in particular explains key contractual concepts such as warranties, indemnities, limitations of liability, and areas of potential danger, such as negligence and nuisance claims between the contracting parties.
There is also a strong focus on spoken and written accuracy. We know that lawyers are important people who do not want to make mistakes in English. We will improve your general accuracy by correcting those small mistakes in your speaking and writing.
We use real contracts, real legal documents and real cases, so that you only learn practical and useful content.

Speaking With Confidence

Many lawyers can feel uncomfortable when they have to speak English with other lawyers or important clients.
This is natural. Lawyers are well-respected people, and can feel more nervous than others about making a mistake.
You might have to speak to a client in a conference call, or negotiate an important deal with lawyers from another country. As a professional, you feel a lot of pressure to be accurate and have everyone understand you.
The Legal English Intensive course isn’t only about legal grammar and pronunciation workshops. It’s also an opportunity to overcome that nervousness, and speak English in a more relaxed way, and with much more confidence.
Whether you have to make a professional Zoom or TEAMS call, speak to a client face-to-face, or give a presentation, we know how you feel.

TOLES

TOLES means ‘Test of Legal English Skills’ and it is an online exam in English especially for lawyers and law students.
As a busy lawyer, you feel that you do not need another certificate to add to the many you already have. However, TOLES is available to you online, and you can decide to take the exam and get your certificate at any time in the year after your course. You can do the exam at home at a time that is good for you, on one of the exam dates below.
The TOLES exams are available at three different levels of difficulty and you are free to choose which you prefer when you return home after your course. Your teacher will tell you more if you are interested.
You will receive an attendance certificate for Legal English Intensive with Cambridge Law Studio on the last day of your course.
